The Cinema Arts Centre celebrates our 40th Anniversary, and 3rd Anniversary of the death of our beloved Co-Founder Vic Skolnick, with a screening of Vic’s favorite film: Doris Dörrie’s luminous celebration of beauty and new beginnings.
Trudi and Rudi are a long-married couple who travel to the German countryside to visit their children only to realize that they’re emotionally distant and unavailable. When Trudi suddenly passes away and Rudi realizes that he never knew his wife as well as he wanted to or expressed his affection in a way that truly reverberated, the widower is devastated to discover just what sacrifices Trudi had made to be with him. A grief-stricken Rudi vows to honor her unfulfilled desires by embarking on a life-changing journey to Japan, a place Trudi always wanted to visit. A trip to Tokyo in the midst of the breathtaking cherry blossom festival – a colorful event staged to celebrate beauty, impermanence, and new beginnings – sparks an unlikely friendship with a young woman who helps connect Rudi with his wife’s lifelong love for dance. Cherry Blossoms is a poignant celebration of beauty and new beginnings. Germany, 2009, 127 min., color, 35mm / Director-Writer: Doris Dörrie / Cast: Hannelore Elsner, Elmar Wepper, Nadja Uhl, Maximilian Brückner
