In the heat of the competition you would have thought you were sitting on the 50 yard line of the Super Bowl. The cheers, the chants, and even the wave were all found in the dining of the Adria Hotel in Bayside, NY. The reason for the cheers? Three Long Island chefs, and their staff, were in the middle of a heated kitchen battle to see who would reign supreme.
On Sept. 20th there was a battle of the kitchens - a three-way face-off between Super’s Cafe at the Sheraton Four Points Plainview, the Giraffe Room Lounge and Restaurant at the Inn at Great Neck and Marco Polo’s at the Viana Hotel and Spa. All three of these great hotels are coincidentally are run by Samar Hospitality.
Talking about the competition, Alan Mindel, who is the operating partner of Samar Hospitality said, “You see this stuff on TV. I really thought there was a lot we could do that no one really realized and I thought why not a competition?”
And what a competition it was. With over 170 guests, all who also wore the hat of judge, the evening was a great success. Each of the guests would judge the eventual winner by rating each dish, on a scale of 1 to 5, on a scorecard. Each of the kitchens would serve a small portion of an entree and a desert.
The contest was time based. A time limit was set for each kitchen to get each dish plated and served in less than 20 minutes. “At first I didn’t know what to expect,” said Moira Goldberg, executive chief of the Giraffe Room. “I had some anxiety, but once we got into it I loved it.”
One of the diners/judges, Molly Drymansaid said of Marco Polo’s entrée, “My favorite dish had to be the rib eye. It was full of flavor, it was cooked well and all the flavors went together very well. Some of the other stuff didn’t kind of wow me, but [the rib eye] was really good.”
The eventual winner was Goldberg and her kitchen staff from the Giraffe Room. They not only took home the $3,000 prize, but something even more valuable... pride of being the best kitchen in the Samar Hospitality family.
