Nicholas Coppola, a man living on Long Island and an active member of St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, was recently ousted from his parish duties after it came to light that he had married his long-time partner, David Krespo. Previously, Coppola had a number of parish duties, such as teaching children in preparation for confirmation, assisting at funerals, and serving at the altar.
What makes his story particularly astonishing is that his parish was previously completely aware of the fact that he was gay, and had no problem with it. It was only after Coppola tied the knot that his parish turned on him, saying he could no longer participate in his duties. Coppola was told by Reverend Nicholas D. Lombardi, “I have no choice but to remove you,” after receiving an anonymous letter complaining about Coppola’s married status. Coppola contested the action, but Bishop Robert Brennan stated that things were “not going to change,” given the complaints.
Speaking on the issue, Sean Dolan, director for communications for the diocese, stated, “The church has a right to have people in public positions who accurately represent its teachings. If someone decides to get married in a homosexual marriage, they don’t quite understand, or at least don’t follow, Catholic teaching.”
