Session 1: Monday –Thursday, July 8-11, 9am-2pm
Session 2: Monday – Thursday, August 19-22, 9am-2pm
The Bridgehampton Museum is partnering again with the Charles Addams Foundation to bring a fun-filled cartooning workshop to children and young adults two separate weeks during the summer of 2013. Only three spaces remain available for the first session. The workshop fulfills part of the mission of the Tee and Charles Addams Foundation, to share Addams’ artistic achievements through programs developed from his works and archives.
Charles Addams (1912-1988) was an American cartoonist mostly known for his darkly humorous Addams family characters. He began doodling at a young age and eventually contributed cartoons for his high school literary magazine. After college, his first cartoon appeared in The New Yorker in 1932 and were thereafter regularly featured. His cartoons were also published in several magazines, dressed the cover of music albums, and were even the inspiration behind several television shows and films.
The Cartooning workshop is an entertaining and artistic opportunity for children that love to draw. Drawing methods used by professionals are taught: the various steps of turning an idea into a simple sketch, then a refined pencil drawing, and finally a finished pen and ink cartoon. Students will use quill pens and light boxes, and finish their work with ink washes applied with a brush. While developing their own style and characters, light and shadow, as well as cross-hatching and textural techniques will add to the depth of each finished work. In addition to executing their own ideas, students will create illustrations based on written descriptions of Charles Addams cartoons, with the originals revealed to them at the week's end. Coupled with the allure of the beach and outdoors, children will enjoy a few air-conditioned hours under the expert and animated direction of local illustrator and artist, Peter Spacek.
Artist Peter Spacek has been creating cartoons since 2006 beginning with weekly opinion-page contributions to The East Hampton Star. He founded Ditch Ink in 2002 with the publication of his first book, “Wetiquette,” an illustrated guide to surfing etiquette. The once professional illustrator for Madison Avenue ad agencies is an active contributor to national magazines, including The Surfer’s Journal. Spacek was born to Czechoslovakian parents in Waldshut, Germany, grew up in Santa Barbara, California and began visiting the Hamptons more than 30 years ago. He became a full-time resident in 1994 and lives in Springs alongside the Bonackers.
Workshops will be held at the BHM Archives, 2539A Montauk Highway. Each session is $200 per student. Open to kids of all ages. Kids will be grouped by age and ability. An exhibit of student work will take place at the end of the last day of each session. The August 19-22 session will occur subject to sufficient enrollment.
Registration can be made by contacting the society at (631) 537-1088, or bhhs@optonline.net.
