The Long Island Ducks have just acquired Carlos Zambrano, formerly of the Cubs. Speaking on the transfer, Cubs teammate Jake Fox said, “He’s an extremely talented pitcher with a lot of experience. He is very exuberant. He is a good character for this league. He’ll bring fans. He’ll be a great addition.” This off-season, despite his great record as a pitcher, Zambrano struggled to find a team to sign with, owing to his issues with his temper—which also were what caused him to be fired from the Cubs, who traded him to the Marlins prior to the 2012 baseball season. During that season, Zambrano went 7-10 with a 4.49 ERA in 35 games, 20 starts. While playing with the Cubs, Zambrano played a key role in bringing the team within one game of the World Series in 2003.
Suspensions are a regular part of Zambrano’s life, and he may bring some volatility and unpredictability to the Ducks now that he has signed on, but there is no doubt that he also brings a great deal of skill. So far the manager for the Ducks has not made any comment about the decision to bring Zambrano on board, but Ducks fans will be waiting anxiously to see how the decision plays out.
