There is no question that Hurricane Sandy did incredible amounts of damage to the homes and landscape of Long Island. But, there is also a deep scar within the business community as many businesses have already closed, on the verge of closing, or are struggling to get back to pre-Sandy days. Because of this there is a lot of movement within the Federal Government, now that the Sandy Aid bill has passed, to help with these struggling businesses.
Those impacted by Hurricane Sandy have another 30 days to get their disaster assistance requests to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Residents and businesses now have until March 29 to submit applications for federal assistance. The previous deadline was Feb. 27.
FEMA funding can include money for rental assistance, essential home repairs, personal property losses and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance. This is a tremendous boost to the business sector, the economy, and people's general well being.
In addition, low-interest business loans can be applied for through the Small Business Administration. The deadline for those applications has also been extended to March 29. This measure alone will help with new start ups and building a strong economic foundation.
Those with questions or who need help completing applications can meet with FEMA and SBA representatives at any disaster recovery center.
