Suburban entomologists expanded our children’s program this summer after last year’s success educating children on the vast world of insect science.
With our Smithtown, NY office’s collection of different bugs, we thought about sharing them – who wouldn’t mind getting down and dirty with insects? The answer was simple: kids.
Suburban’s entomologists, Lynn Frank, Bob Weimer, and Billy Somerville, travel to various libraries on Long Island to host free programs for kids throughout grades three and five. Our staff’s upbeat energy, knowledgeable activities, and, sure, our adorable pet beagle, Bradley, were such a success, we received calls in January of 2012 to hear about the next set of programs throughout Suffolk and Nassau County.
The program runs for 45 minutes to an hour. During this time, our entomologists introduce different bugs such as a tarantula and Madagascar roaches. We also bring in some of our office pets like our beagle and hamster. We teach the kids about insect survival, do-it-yourself exterminating, and then play with some coloring and word searches.
