This morning, Brookhaven Town Hall had to evacuate in response to a bomb threat. The evacuation followed in response to an envelope containing a threat which was delivered to News 12 Long Island in Woodbury. Reporters opened the envelop and read it. The threat was for a different date, not today’s date, but the building was evacuated anyway at 1:30 p.m. It was not the first bomb threat directed at the town hall in recent days. One week ago, police in Suffolk County found graffiti reading “Bomb Town Hall” at Martha Avenue Recreational Park, seven miles down the road. The town hall has also received a lot of criticism lately for its poor handling of the blizzard highway conditions. Much of this was directed at Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, who was on vacation at the time but has since apologized to the public.
Unfortunately, this sort of thing is not at all unheard of on Long Island. Indeed, just a few months ago, a man named Ronald Kellman of Central Islip pleaded guilty to threatening to bomb Islip Town Hall four times over a nine month period. Many schools in Long Island also routinely receive bomb threats and shooting threats. This trend has been growing steadily ever since the Sandy Hook massacre in Connecticut.
