A 25 year old man from Brentwood, Long Island, named Marcos Alonso Zea, also known as Ali Zea, has just been arrested for multiple charges of terrorism relating to Al-Qaeda. He has plead not guilty on all counts. The U.S. Department of Justice described how in January of 2012, United Kingdom customs officials prevented Zea from flying to Yemen. Some Long Islanders may recall a similar story earlier in the year about a man named Justin Kaliebe, who was arrested before making a similar trip to Yemen. The reason this story is similar to that one is not a coincidence; the two are closely related. Kaliebe was given the money for his trip by Zea after Zea failed to make his own venture overseas. Kaliebe has already pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to provide support materials to Al-Qaeda.
When Zea realized that federal authorities were on his trail, he attempted to have data on his hard drive wiped before it could be intercepted, but the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force was able to acquire the hard drives in April, and discovered evidence corroborating his guilt. Zea has not only been accused of multiple counts of terrorism, but also of the attempted obstruction of an official proceeding.
