The American Cancer Society reports that approximately 226,870 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women, in 2012 alone. This is a real statistic that puts a significant charge on health care professionals to educate the public. The physicians at St. Catherine ofSienaMedicalCenterinSmithtownare responding to the charge. June Lee, MD, oncoplastic breast surgeon and director of breast health services, has kicked off National Breast Cancer Awareness month with a special breakfast seminar. On October 1, 2012, Dr. Lee gave a presentation to a group of more than 50 women at the First Baptist Church of Patchogue.
Dr. Lee was asked to share her knowledge with a “Mother and Helpers” group at the church of her patient, Margaret Brooks. Mrs. Brooks welcomed the group with a prayer of thanks and heartfelt introduction to Dr. Lee. When describing her experience with Dr. Lee she stated, "She walked me through every step of the way. We laughed together, we cried together and we prayed together, and because of that I would not trust my life with any other surgeon."
Dr. Lee’s lecture was a thorough overview of breast cancer, sparing no details. The women had the unique opportunity to ask questions in an intimate session. Dr. Lee shared her passion for the mission of healing and the risk factors associated with breast cancer with a theme topic, “Breast Cancer: What's New and Tried-and-True”. Most importantly she stressed, "Save yourself pain and emotional distress, look at your risk factors, and get your mammogram every year.”
