Despite the severe winter weather warnings, numerous drivers on Long Island decided to venture out onto the Long Island Expressway on Friday, only to find themselves stalled out and stranded in the middle of the highway clear through the night. Hundreds of cars and drivers spent the late hours in the freezing cold, most of them without food or water. Even snow plough drivers, in an effort to help others and complete their tasks, found themselves stuck in the snow right along with the other drivers.
Rescue efforts for the stranded drivers are currently underway. More than 300 snow ploughs have been sent to the scene by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, and the National Guard has also been deployed, riding snow mobiles. While the storm passed over New York City without causing much damage, it dumped feet of snow on Long Island, Massachusettes and Connecticut. The situation in MA and CT has been similar to that in Long Island, with highways clogged with stalled traffic. No deaths have been reported on Long Island, but several people in CT had to be ferried to hospitals for hypothermia, and the situation on the highways in all three states has still not been completely resolved. The stranded drivers found themselves in a very serious survival situation last night, and there are a lot of people today who are lucky to still be alive.
