“Bridgehampton Historical Society Announces Scholarship Program Winner”
The Bridgehampton Historical Society was proud to name greater Bridgehampton resident Steven A. Hatgistavrou as their 2012 scholarship program winner. In March, Mr. Hatgistavrou, an East Hampton High School senior, submitted an essay titled “Memories of the Fall Classic of 1960.” The essay, an oral history taken from another Bridgehampton resident, Ted Damiecki, describes the thrill of listening to the World Series match-up between the New York Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates on the radio that summer. For unknown reasons, the NBC broadcast of the World Series did not extend to the Hamptons during the summer of 1960.
The historical society’s mission is to inspire the documentation, preservation and interpretation of the history, oral history and cultural traditions of Bridgehampton and its surrounding communities. In line with this mission, the scholarship program expands on the society’s collection of oral histories and enjoys the local youths’ interpretation of the scholarship assignment. Mr. Hatgistavrou’s essay is very engaging and will no doubt be of interest to the many fans of baseball this summer when it is published in the society’s Bridge Journal, due out soon. In addition to being published, Mr. Hatgistavrou received a certificate and check for $1000.
