Better Information for Better Health

West Islip, NY - Starting on March 9, Good Samaritan Hospital will be the third Catholic Health Services (CHS) hospital to launch an electronic medical records system (EMR) as part of an initiative called CHS eHealth. Good Samaritan joins St. Francis—The Heart Center in Roslyn, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown and a growing number of hospitals nationwide to go completely electronic using the Epic EMR. Eventually all CHS hospitals will implement the EMR system.

The new Epic EMR will provide instant access to information about a patient’s current and chronic medical conditions, medications, test results, and allergies to physicians, nurses and other clinical staff, enabling them to more efficiently coordinate care. Also, physicians will be able to make better informed decisions based on information in hospital charts and private practice records integrated into one patient health record. For patients, there are many benefits, including having their medical history, medications, and treatment records all in one place and having fewer forms to fill out in the future.

Working from a single patient record enables physicians, nurses and the entire staff to have immediate, real-time access to all relevant data and protocols,” said Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer and Chairman of Internal Medicine Jerome Weiner, MD.

In conjunction with the Epic EMR at Good Samaritan, affiliated physician practices are offering CHS MyChart, giving patients convenient, online access to portions of their EMR to check lab or test results, read hospital discharge instructions, manage doctor appointments and perform other important tasks from home.
