GREENPORT, N.Y. - Peconic Landing is proud to announce its Ballet in Cinema series featuring the world’s most famous ballet companies captured live in high-definition digital projection. Five ballets will be presented January through May in the Peconic Landing Community Center at 1500 Brecknock Road, Greenport.
The Sleeping Beauty will be performed by The Royal Ballet of London Sunday, Jan. 13, at 3 p.m. The Sleeping Beauty is the pinnacle of classical ballet: a perfect marriage of Petipa’s choreography, Tchaikovsky’s music and a glorious challenge for every dancer onstage. It is also The Royal Ballet’s signature work. Today’s Sleeping Beauty features additional choreography by Anthony Dowell, Christopher Wheeldon and Frederick Ashton, and stars Lauren Cuthbertson and Sergei Polunin. “A one-stop history of the art form up to that point, it remains the apotheosis of regal Russian classicism and a thematic tapestry of unrivalled richness, all playing out to Tchaikovsky’s most opulent and ingeniously constructed score,” said Mark Monahan of The Telegraph. Cost is $15.
An Evening with Sol León and Paul Lightfoot features Netherlands Dans Theater in-house choreographers Sol León and Paul Lightfoot Sunday, Feb. 3, at 3 p.m. During this evening, they carry the audience to their artistic universe to see the characteristic style of the successful Spanish-British choreographer duo in the humorous “SH-Boom” and enjoy the powerful theatrical “Same Difference,” set to music by Philip Glass. The closing performance of “Shoot the Moon,” also with the beautiful sounds of Glass, offers a glimpse into the love lives of several characters. Cost is $15.
Featured at Peconic Landing Sunday, March 10, at 3 p.m., Notre-Dame de Paris, inspired by Victor Hugo’s novel, with music by Maurice Jarre, sets by René Allio and the renowned costumes of Yves Saint-Laurent, returns to La Scala Ballet after more than 10 years since its last performances. Once again it will be celebrating choreographer Roland Petit and the triumph of his vision of performance as a total creation: dance, sets, costumes, music, theatricality . . . with two of the international ballet world’s brightest stars: Roberto Bolle and Natalia Osipova. Cost is $15.
The Rite of Spring performed by the Bolshoi Ballet can be seen Sunday, April 21, at 3 p.m. When The Rite of Spring premiered at the Ballets Russes in 1913, the audience was in such an uproar – literally shouting and throwing things at the orchestra – that composer Igor Stravinsky had to retreat to the wings of the stage. Since then, the work has become one of the most popular pieces of dance music in the repertoire. This new choreographic version by Wayne McGregor, commissioned by the Bolshoi to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the ballet, brings new energy to the themes of the Russian Spring, the Adoration of the Earth and of course the provocative Sacrifice of the Virgin. Cost is $20.
The Royal Ballet of London presents Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Sunday, May 5, at 3 p.m. Those familiar with Lewis Carroll’s literary menagerie of colorful characters will enjoy the clarity with which Christopher Wheeldon portrays them in dance. The whole Company is drawn into the fun, dancing a myriad of quirky characters: a twitchy White Rabbit, a tap dancing Mad Hatter, a sinuous caterpillar and so many more. Alice and the Knave of Hearts, deftly danced by two Royal Ballet Principal dancers, are at the center of the story, and the role of The Queen of Hearts, another Principal, is wittily captured with hilarious results. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a brilliantly imagined show and, with a magical score, ingeniously inventive designs and a wealth of theatrical effects, has something for everyone to treasure. Don’t miss what the Telegraph called “a dazzling affair . . . intoxicating and exceptional . . . [Wheeldon] – along with everyone else involved in this mind-boggling production – should also take a bow.” Cost is $15.
