Officials in Nassau County have just uncovered a massive counterfeiting scheme operated by two brothers from Franklin Square and Plainview. Pardeep Malik and Hamant Mullick are not accused of counterfeiting money, but rather a variety of health and beauty products by major brands such as Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer. The two brothers operated a showroom for their fake products in Valley Stream, and sold the counterfeited goods to independent retailers around the area. While many products have turned up in Long Island stores, others have made it to neighboring states like Pennsylvania and have even turned up as far away as Florida.
Authorities are still looking into the fake products and whether they may pose any health risks to users. As of yet there are no conclusions, but consumers are advised to be extra careful while shopping for baby oil, Vaseline, and other common drug store products. Fake products may have unusual labeling with unexpected colors or languages, or a picture that does not match the official company image. Extra low prices are also a warning sign. Counterfeit products will also not provide the same quality as the real thing. If you suspect that you are using a counterfeited product, it is best to dispense with it and go and purchase a replacement.
