On August 11th, Brian Boyle, author of Iron Heart: The True Story of How I Came Back From the Dead will be competing in his fourth Ironman triathlon, taking place in New York City. This race is very special to Boyle, who is participating as a tribute to the American Red Cross and the 36 blood donors that helped replace his 60% blood loss to save his life; by giving just a little bit of their time these donors gave him a lifetime.
It was eight years ago when a car accident almost took his life. During his recovery, he needed to be resuscitated 8 times! Machines and state-of-the-art medical equipment kept him alive around this time back in 2004. And now in this race, much like the one that completed the healing for Brian and his family in 2007, he will swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, and run 26.2 miles to celebrate life and to show the appreciation to the people who saved it!
Brian joined Red Cross in 2007 after completing the Hawaii Ironman. As a blood recipient, donor, and Red Cross volunteer spokesperson, he is thrilled to represent the American Red Cross, and wear the Red Cross on my race suit bearing 36 individual Red Crosses to represent the 36 donors.
“There is no gift as absolutely precious as the gift of life, and no one acknowledges this more than Brian Boyle. Brian treats each day as a gift and an opportunity to help others. I’m in awe of Brian’s tenacity, relentless energy, graciousness, dedicated spirit, and compassionate commitment to helping others,” said Gail McGovern, President, American Red Cross.
