After a fire devastated the Italian restaurant in Amityville, the owner of Vero, Michael Vittorio Esposito, never thought twice about what he was going to do. Rebuilding was first and foremost what they were going to do, and I, for one, am glad that they did. Vero's has always been one of those places that I liked to go to, and now I have an even better reason. It is not that the decor has changed. There is still the lovely dining room with a vaulted ceiling and Murano glass sconces. However, the menu is delightfully different.
The original Vero, which first opened in 2010, served only small plates. For anyone who really liked the food, like yours truly, this was a little bit of a frustration. The small platess are still on the menu, but there are also full-size pasta dishes as well as half-portions and fish and meat entrees, including a $42 steak. Yes, a $42 steak that is worth every penny.
On my first visit to Vero since it was reopened, I had to see if the food was still as good as it was. I quickly found out that not only were the smells fantastic, but the taste of the food was perhaps better than I had remembered. And, also in larger portions. The polenta, with its creamy sauce, was large enough for a family. It also came out in a four foot board covered in a pork, veal, and beef ragu.
However, there was some other plates on the menu that I had to check out that were new to the selection of dinner choices. One such new item was the pork ribs. These were big and tender and in a sweet onion braise. One other item that I had to try was Nonna’s meatball sliders. They were light and airy, made with veal, and served on crisp little buns.
There was too much to sample on my first visit back, but I am sure that I will have more to say in the weeks to come as there were other pasta dishes that I was intrigued by, but couldn't indulge in at that time.
Vero Italian Kitchen and Lounge in Amityville is sure to be a big hit with both old customers and new ones.
