Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) has announced that it will host a free 14-week caregiver training class at Atria Senior Living, located at 4089 Nesconset Highway in South Setauket. Classes meet every Monday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., starting January 28.
This course is for professional caregivers who care for patients with Alzheimer’s Disease or other dementias. Social workers, nursing home administrators and recreational therapists who attend the class are eligible to receive Continuing Education Unit credits.
These classes will cover five main topics: the process and development of Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias; the behaviors associated with dementia and how to manage and cope with them; communication skills for individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias and their families; strategies for developing meaningful activities for those with dementia; and support services and stress management training.
In addition to instruction, students will participate in role-playing situations and have the opportunity to work with case studies. For students who need to do research, ADRC will have an on-site research library at its Bay Shore location that is scheduled to open in early February.
