Following the success of this summer’s East End Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Riverhead, Alzheimer’s Association Long Island will have its second East End Walk to End Alzheimer’s/Fall Festival on October 20 at the intersection of Main Street and the Village Green (near the gazebo) in Westhampton Beach. Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by the opening ceremony at 10 a.m. and the Walk at 11 a.m.
The opening ceremony will feature entertainment by the New York USA Troupe, recognition of all participating team captains and a “Promise Garden” ceremony. After the Walk, participants will be treated to lunch. There will also be a petting zoo, pony rides and face painting for the children.
There is no registration fee for teams or walkers who raise donations for the Walk. For those who wish to register the day of the Walk, general admission is $25 for adults, $10 for teens, and $5.00 for children two years of age and older. Children under 2 are free. Family discount packages (two adults and two children) are available for $30.00. All the proceeds will go to support AALI’s mission to fight the dreaded disease.
AALI’s first East End Walk this year took place On August 25 in Riverhead, where more than 200 people took part in the event. Through the efforts of these individuals and teams who took part in this event, more than $35,000 was raised, exceeding the fundraising goal of $25,000.
The Westhampton Beach Walk to End Alzheimer’s commemorates the one-year anniversary of the grand opening of AALI’s office in Southampton. This satellite office was designed to allow care consultants to schedule family meetings and provide information for families or individuals on the East End of Long Island who are coping with Alzheimer’s disease. The event also coincides with the month of October being Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.
Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and is now the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s estimated 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s, 60,000 of whom live here on Long Island.
The Westhampton Beach Walk is sponsored by Nancy Burner & Associates, P.C. For more information, please contact Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, at (631) 820-8068 or visit www.alz.org/longisland.
