A three foot long American Alligator was found in Lilly Pond County Park in Lake Ronkonkoma today.
Chief Roy Gross of the Suffolk SPCA said that the Alligator was found in an area where people and children have access and that the Alligator could not survive the cold weather.
After a collaborative effort by Suffolk County Park Police, Suffolk County Police Emergency Services, and the Suffolk County SPCA. Lt. Raymond Galoppi of the SPCA donned protective gear and went into the water to rescue the Alligator. The Alligator appeared healthy and was transported by the SPCA to Second Chance Wildlife Rescue. This is the latest in a series of reptile abandonments on Long Island. There have been 7 alligators recovered on Long Island, 5 of which have been found in Suffolk County in addition to a Boa Constrictor, a Rattlesnake and an Iguana.
Chief Gross said that anyone with information should contact the Suffolk County SPCA at (631) 382-SPCA (7722).
