If you were one of the ones that decided to stay home because of the storm, you were one of the lucky ones. Sure, we must get to our jobs, but with a storm that drops over 30 inches of snow across Long Island, there is plenty of reason to stay home and stay safe. The treacherous road conditions and the difficulty in removing vast amounts of snow also lead to numerous school closings as well as some businesses not opening. This was seen mostly in Suffolk and Nassau counties.
For those who wanted to get to work, your best bet is the mass transit systems. For the most part, public transit systems had resumed operating close to a normal schedule, with some exceptions, and most major highways and roads were navigable. The Metro-North Railroad was running fewer trains to New York and was still offering limited service beyond Stamford in Connecticut. The Long Island Railroad also was running fewer trains to New York and was still not running trains east of Speonk and Ronkonkoma. Commuters reported crowded trains.
The Long Island Expressway heading west reopened for the morning commute after the removal of vehicles that had been trapped in the snow. But traveling was still perilous. Anyone trying to get to work is being warned to allow more time for travel, and to drive with extreme caution.
Getting to work is important. However, when life and limb are on the line, in a storm of this proportion, it is always best to make sure that you are safe first.
