Stay Active and Warm This Winter with Ice Skating and a Cup of Joe in Long Island

The chill in the air can lead many children and adults who enjoy sports and physical activities outdoors to go into hiding. But, let's not forget about the great sports and physical activities you can do during the winter months.
In Long Island, you can find several locations for the active sport of ice skating. Select between indoor or outdoor ice skating. Either way, it makes a wonderful activity for the young and the old, from singles, couples, to families.
Get your winter gear on and head to any one of these locations for fun and physical winter action:
- Tanger Outlet at the Arches (631-940-9200): It is known for shopping, but come winter time it also makes a wonderful place for ice skating. Its outdoor ice skating rink will remain open thru March 14. Admission ranges from $7 to $10 and skate rentals range from $3 to $4 depending on the day of the week you go. Children under age 5 skate for free. TangerClub Members with a TangerClub Identification get rental skates for free.
This ice skating rink also has several regular discounts and events:
- Cheap Skate Every Monday from 6 – 9 pm for $7 (includes admission and skate rental);
- Student Discount Every Tuesday for $7 (includes admission and skate rental when you present your school ID);
- Costume Character Appearances Every Wednesday; and
- Live DJ Nights Every Friday from 6 – 9 pm.
- Cantiague Park’s Indoor Ice Skating Rink (516-571-7056): Located in Hicksville, this indoor ice skating rink was renovated in 2010. It has hosted ice skating greats such as Nancy Kerrigan and the National Hockey League team the New York Islanders. It is open to group sessions, private lessons, birthday parties and public skating. Call in advance to confirm if there are any group sessions taking place during the time you plan to visit to avoid crowding. Each skating session runs two hours, including public skating. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children with a leisure pass. Those without a leisure pass can expect to pay $20 for adults and $14 for children. An additional $5 apply for skate rentals, regardless of whether or not you have a leisure pass.
- Christopher Morley Park’s Outdoor Skating Rink (516-571-8113): Located in Roslyn-North Hills, this outdoor ice skating rink is also open thru mid-March. It offers the real ice skating sport experience with its full-size rink measuring 200-by-80-feet. The rink is used by local hockey teams. It also offers two-hour public skating sessions as well as group and private lessons. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for children age 4 to 17 and $4 for seniors, disabled persons, veterans and volunteer firefighters, police and ambulance corps with a leisure pass. Those without a leisure pass can expect to pay $20 for adults and $14 for children. An additional $5 apply for skate rentals, regardless of whether or not you have a leisure pass.
