It’s hard to believe for many Longer Islanders, but it has now been an entire half year since Hurricane Sandy swept across the island, leaving devastation in its wake. A lot of progress has been made toward repairs and toward bolstering the strength of LI communities, but there is still a long road left to walk. Long Beach Medical Center remains closed, and while a five mile stretch along Ocean Parkway was re-opened last week, Robert Moses State Park remains closed, as do sections of Jones Beach, both popular destinations for Memorial Day Weekend visitors.
With so much left to do, many residents are wondering how much longer the recovery period will take. Officials looking toward Hurricane Katrina to try and find some perspective say that it could take another year to fully recover, possibly longer. And as many officials have been quick to point out, there are some side effects of the storm which will take much longer to recover from—financial and emotional costs which in some cases, are too high to calculate. “Some homes just won’t be rebuilt,” says Amityville Mayor Peter Imbert. “I think we can hope for a 99% recovery.”
