Mt. Sinai, NY (September 8, 2012) – Deborah McKee, Republican and Conservative Candidate for New York State Assembly in the 4th District today applauded New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, State Judge Fern Fisher, and Staten Island District Attorney Dan Donovan, for their integrity in demanding a probe of the Joint Commission On Public Ethics (JCOPE) in the battle against the culture of corruption plaguing Albany.
On Tuesday, JCOPE, a body created to clean up corruption in government, secretly voted not to investigate the backdoor deal Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver made when he authorized the payment of $103,000 in taxpayer funds to the victims of alleged sexual harassment by Democratic Brooklyn Assemblyman Vito Lopez.
In response, Governor Cuomo, who has vowed to end the culture of corruption in Albany, pressured JCOPE to rethink their decision by opening a Moreland Act commission investigation of JCOPE’s refusal to investigate Silver. Additionally, Staten Island D.A. Dan Donovan, who is handling the allegations against Lopez, was authorized by State Judge Fern Fisher to investigate the allegations against Silver as well.
“JCOPE’s decision to exempt Sheldon Silver from investigation is proof positive that the commissions goal is not to clean up corruption, but to protect powerful and corrupt politicians in Albany,” said McKee. “Fortunately, there are still some elected officials in New York, who are willing to stand up and do the right thing. I applaud Governor Cuomo, Judge Fisher, and District Attorney Donovan for their courage in combating a longstanding tradition of corruption in Albany.”
McKee also urges Governor Cuomo, and Donovan to expand their investigation to include the Committee on Government Relations, chaired by JCOPE creator Assemblyman Steve Englebright for allowing this type of abuse to fester in Albany.
