More than 300 guns were recently seized from a Long Island home located near a local high school in the town of Centereach. Many of the weapons, owned by Jay Steiner, 66, were illegal. Suffolk police received a tip from a fellow gun owner who visited Steiner's home. The guns, which were scattered throughout the house, included 203 rifles and shotguns along with 85 illegal handguns. There were also thousands of rounds of ammunition on hand.
While on first glance, this may appear puzzling (what could one person do with 300 guns?), there is some explanation in the form of Steiner’s past. Previously, Steiner was a businessman who had a federal gun license which allowed him to buy and sell arms. His license expired in 2004. He continued circulate business cards featuring his expired license number. He had no license for any of his handguns. What Steiner was doing with the arsenal of weapons is unclear; the most likely explanation is that he was still in the buying and selling business, operating illegally under his old license. Why he never re-applied has also not been discussed. Police are currently investigating whether any of the weapons in his home may have been stolen or used in violent crimes.
