The local Long Island running community was able to celebrate the 27th annual holding of the Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay. The day was picture perfect with beautiful sunshine and a slight breeze. This incredible race, which is sponsored by the Bethpage Federal Credit Union, was a tremendous success with 144 teams of runners assembled to run the 50 mile course.
Each team of eight runners traversed this 50-mile course that started at Jones Beach State Park, wound its way through Wantagh, Seaford, Massapequa, Farmingdale, Old Bethpage, Plainview, Huntington and back west into Cold Spring Harbor, Syosset and Oyster Bay before ending at Fireman’s Field in Oyster Bay, adjacent to Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park. Each of the teams had their own identity like Team Katie, Northport Physical Therapy Team, The Runner's Edge Fab Abs, and the Last Minute Brew Crew.
One of the exciting team races of the event was between Team Katie and Sayville Running Company’s Men’s Open Team. This year's event saw the end of a 5 year winning spree by the Sayville team as Team Katie broke out ahead of them in the sixth leg of the relay.
When it comes to the grueling 50 mile race there is no better sight than the "ironmen" who endured the entire grueling distance. Five individuals successfully completed the entire race. They were led by amazing wheelchair athlete Peter Hakins, followed by Rudy Afanador, Riccardo De Gallo, Jay Masten and Philip Posa. Hawkins had successfully completed his first triathlon – the Runner’s Edge - Town of Oyster Bay Triathlon – only three weeks before his five-mile run.
There were many sponsors, and herculian individual efforts, that all helped to make sure this 27th rendition of the race was unforgettable and fun.
