WINNERS ANNOUNCED AT 26^TH ANNUAL STAR ISLAND SHARK TOURNAMENT

The crew of the “Bluefin” pose with their winning catch, a 422-lb. thresher, at the 26^th annual Star Island Shark Tournament.

Montauk, NY — On June 15-16, the 26^th Annual Star Island Shark Tournament was held at Star Island Yacht Club. One hundred fifty-six boats and 1,000 anglers participated in the two-day event, with a total of 47 fish — 32 of which were makos — being weighed in and more than $540,000 in total prize money being paid out. The winners were:

Heaviest Shark — 422 lb. thresher. Boat: “Bluefin.” Captain: Mike Marro. Angler: Tom Rispoli III. Prize: $30,000.

Heaviest Shark of the Day (Day 1) — 422 lb. thresher. Boat: “Bluefin.” Captain: Mike Marro. Angler: Tom Rispoli III. Prize: $5,000.

Heaviest Shark of the Day (Day 2) — 344 lb. mako. Boat: “Little Mac.” Captain: Pat McFarland. Angler: Mike Ragano. Prize: $5,000.

Heaviest Mako — 344 lbs. Boat: “Little Mac.” Captain: Pat McFarland. Angler: Mike Ragano. Prize: $5,000.

2^nd Heaviest Mako — 317 lbs. Boat: “Barbaric.” Captain: Greg DeSantis. Angler: Dennis DeMarco. Prize: $2,500.

3^rd Heaviest Mako — 305 lbs. Boat: “Billistic.” Captain: Bill Curley. Angler: Mike Giles. Prize: $1,500.

Heaviest Fish (Other) — 422 lb. thresher. Boat: “Bluefin.” Captain: Mike Marro. Angler: Tom Rispoli III. Prize: $3,500.

2^nd Heaviest (Other) — 319 lb. thresher. Boat: “My Buddy.” Captain: Dick Aidinis. Angler: Jim Fox. Prize: $1,500.

3^rd Heaviest (Other) — 289 lb. thresher. Boat: “Ramble On Rose.” Captain: Joe McVeigh. Angler: Mark Boyle. Prize: $1,000.

Angler Mike Vultek aboard Captain Ed Pollner’s “P Pod” caught the heaviest bluefish, weighing in at 237 lbs. The crew of the “P Pod” won $5,000 in prizes.

The tournament also collected 750 pounds of edible shark meat, which was donated to the Long Island Council of Churches.

Sponsors of the tournament included White Water Boats, Gershow Recycling, Daiwa Tackle, Suffolk Marine, Grundens, Costa del Mar, Guy Cotton and Maui Jim.
