Runners get one last day to enjoy the 22nd Annual Westhampton Beach Joe Koziarz Memorial Certified 5K Run and Walk. This Saturday, July, 2012 the run will start in front of the Westhampton Post Office at 8:30 a.m. Those on Long Island looking to run in the race will need to show up to the registration which will start at 7 a.m. Cost of the race is $20-$25, and donations are accepted. The course for the race will go through the village streets and will culminate at the Westhampton Beach Village Marina and Yacht Basin.
Just after the race, there will be a Runners Raffle. Held in the Village Green Gazebo, there are expected to be prizes from local shops, restaurants and other area businesses. Donations have already been made to make the prizes more interesting, but more are welcome. The proceeds from the run will go to help the Peconic Bay Medical Center Emergency Room, Koziarz Hurricane Scholarship Fund and the Southampton Town PAL.
Those living in Westhampton Beach may recognize the name Koziarz not only from the race, but from the man who was the director for the McFarland and Koziarz Funeral Home. Koziarz loved running and competed in all of the local races possible. He was even known to attend and compete in the Long Island half-marathon. Those who know him were shocked at his death at only 52 from a heart attack in 1995. The race, formerly known as the Westhampton Beach 5K, went through a name change to honor his memory. His son Michael is now the director for the race named in his father’s honor.
