There are a couple of reasons the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open is exciting to golf fans in Long Island. The first is that the event is debuting at the Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, and the second reason is that one of the participants is a college freshman from Levittown named Annie Park. Park graduated from MacArthur High School, and currently is enrolled at the University of Southern California. She will be contending against the 2011 and 2012 U.S. Open winners, Yeon Ryu and Na Yeon Choi. Park didn’t quite make it into last year’s open, but this time, she’ll have her chance to compete with 155 of the best female golfers in the country.
If you’ve never heard of Sebonack, you’re not alone. The course opened in 2005, so it isn’t that old. It has however been rated as the 6th toughest golf course in the United States by Golf Digest. Locals in Suffolk anticipate that the event could draw a lot more attention to Suffolk County. Indeed, the benefit to the greater Long Island community of hosting the Open could add up to as much as $20 million. If you’re in the area around Sebonack, expect some extra traffic between today and Sunday.
