(RIVERHEAD, NY, December 12, 2012) –– East End Arts is pleased to announce the 2012 recipient of the Frances Ligon Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was inaugurated in the Fall of 2007 in honor of the memory of Mrs. Frances Ligon, who served on the Board of Directors for the East End Arts from 2005 to 2007. She was a well-known advocate for the arts and for the education of youth throughout the East End community, as well as avid gospel singer since childhood, performing regularly as a soloist and as a member of the East End Arts’ Harvest Gospel Choir for 20 years. Those who had the honor of knowing her and of hearing her sing will always remember her ability to lift the spirit with her soulful voice.
East End Arts is delighted to honor Mrs. Ligon's memory by naming José Alvizures as this year's scholarship recipient. José is a 14-year old freshman student at Riverhead High School. He has been studying the cello with Jeannie Woelker at the East End Arts School since 2008, and received an outstanding score on his level 5 NYSSMA solo this year. During middle school, he was a member of the Chamber Orchestra and participated in the Hamptons Music Educators Association Festival (HMEA) twice. He is now in the Riverhead High School Freshman Orchestra. José also participated in the East End Arts’ Perlman Program this past summer, where local string students had the opportunity to play during the baton of Maestro Itzhak Perlman and his student orchestra during an open rehearsal prior to one of their concerts at SoutholdHigh School in July 2012. José has also attended the East End Arts School’s Summer Music Camp and has been a volunteer at the East End Arts’ Community Mosaic Street Painting Festival for several years.
East End Arts congratulates José on this special honor and for all of his hard work and dedication to his music education.
Past recipients of this award are: Brandon Boardman (2010 & 2011); Nazrus Halsey (2009); Christian Hibbert (2008.)
