GARDEN CITY, NY - (March 12, 2013) This spring, Nassau Community College will once again partner with the Long Island Volunteer Center to host the 19th Annual Prom Boutique program.
Since the start of the program in 1993, over 5,000 participants have had their dreams come true by receiving a beautiful prom dress at no cost. The volunteers from the Long Island Volunteer Center become "Fairy God Mothers" to young Cinderella senior girls graduating from local Long Island high schools who lack the funds to purchase a prom dress. This helps ensure that each girl can attend her Prom, a once-in-a lifetime experience that should not be missed due to a wardrobe issue.
The program grew from 35 dresses to over 1,500 in 2012. The dresses are given to girls who would otherwise not be able to afford a prom dress. Dresses are donated from local stores such as Bridal Reflections, as well as from generous women in the community.
This year, the program hopes to make an even larger contribution to those in need and has invited students who were adversely affected by Hurricane Sandy to select a dress. Students are referred by their high school to attend the Prom Boutique, held at Nassau Community College and select a dress that is just right for them.
"This will be the eighth year that Nassau Community College will help the efforts of Prom Boutique," Notes Diana O’Neil, Executive Director of the Long Island Volunteer Center. "This is a program that touches the lives of young ladies in a very personal and meaningful way as Prom is a threshold event and right of passage from high school to the next chapter of their lives."
Drop off sites have been placed in several different locations around the island to collect new and gently used dressy dresses, prom gowns, bridesmaid gowns, special occasion shoes, handbags, costume jewelry and other accessories. All donations must be submitted no later than April 7
th 2013.
