15 Inches of Snow Falls on Long Island

On late Tuesday, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo declared a state of emergency for Long Island.  The artic storm was projected to drop 10 to 14 inches of snow according to the National Weather Service.  Fourteen and a half inches dumped on North Babylon and Selden.  The NWS has stated that this is the highest unofficial recorded amount of snow on the island. Suffolkwas hit harder than Nassau; the lowest amount recorded was 8 inches in Smithtown.  14 inches of snow also fell on Blue Point and Centereach.  In Nassau, the snowfall ranged from 6 to 12 inches, in Bellmore and Massapequa respectively. 

Snowfall was heavy in the surrounding metropolitan area as well.  In New York city, there was a foot of snow in the Bronx.  JFK International reported 7 inches.  Across the bay in Connecticut and New Jersey, a range of 3-10 inches was reported.  Along with heavy snowfall, cold air posed additional hazards.  The cold and snow aren’t over either.  Snow is expected on Thursday as well as over the weekend.  Temperatures have already dipped down to the teens and lower.  Forecasters at the NWS warn Long Islanders to bundle up, since the wind chill factor may make temperatures feel as low as -11 degrees.
